This website is dedicated to the life, descendants and memory of John Og McIntosh, a man who left his homeland to fight for his country, dealt with extreme adversity, was a pioneer in the nascent United States of America and created a line of strong men and women.  This is his story.

On "The Story" page, I've included a copy of "A Brief History of John Og McIntosh", written by Dr. Andrew Jackson McIntosh.  This version was edited by Martha M. McIntosh, to who I offer thanks.  As she states, "I typed it just like it was written, even the punctuation" so it reflects the original copy.

I have divided John Og McIntosh’s life into ten sections:

1.       Early life, from birth to early schooling, beginning in Inverness shire in 1753

2.       Edinburgh with Uncle John Og for both regular schooling and medical school

3.       Army in Scotland and England -

4.       Shipping out to the colonies under Cornwallis’ command -February through May of 1776

5.       Service as assistant to Uncle John Og under Cornwallis May 1776 thru Oct. 4, 1777 (uncle's death at battle of Germantown)

6.       Service under Tarleton after uncle’s death - 1777 thru Jan. 17, 1781 - battle of Cowpens

7.       Capture at Cowpens and prisoner of war status - Jan. 1781 thru June 1782?

8.       Marriage and learning a trade - June 1782 thru spring of 1784

9.       Traveling down the Ohio River to the “Bloody Hunting Ground” of Kentucky and settling at Kenton Station spring 1784 thru 1814 or so

10.   The move from Kentucky to Southern Indiana and death - 1814 thru Jan. 28, 1829

I’m sure there are more divisions that can be made, but I think this will break our information down into ‘biteable’ amounts.  The page entitled "The Story" will be added to as I have time - with a bibliography of sources.  Please let me know if you have any additional information.

The existing documents we have about John Og McIntosh’s life are few and far between.   Therefore, when I can’t find specific information for a specific period of his life, I will attempt to document what I can find about his movements based on who he would have been with – for example, I can find little information about him during the time he and Uncle John Og were under Cornwallis’ command, but Cornwallis’ movements are well documented, so I’ll use these other sources.  If I can find anything specifically about JOM, I will.

This is an ongoing project, one that I hope will acquire more and more information as family members and/or others with knowledge of events surrounding JOM’s life join in.

My email address is hamerse@cs.com- send me comments, suggestions and/or information. I'm hoping to find other John Og descendants who also have information and a desire to share it.  Also, I've created a forum on another page in this website for sharing - please feel free to!

Thanks!
